Learn online with UMSI

The University of Michigan School of Information has several ways for you to learn online with us and engage with other learners around the state of Michigan, the United States and the world. We offer several online learning opportunities to grow your skills, engage your interests and prepare you to advance in your career or start a new one. Join us on a learning journey in one or more of our online options.

Learn for free: University of Michigan community members—including students, faculty, staff and alumni—may take any of our online series or online courses for free.

Online series

The School of Information offers online series of courses enabling you to delve deeply into a well-designed and practical learning experience. You can earn a certificate to use for professional development or lifelong enrichment by completing any of our series.

UMSI series span our areas of teaching and scholarship including user experience research, web design and application, computer programming, data science, and library management. You may also access all UMSI series via Michigan Online.

Online courses

If you are interested in learning more about a topic, want to try a course in a series but not yet commit to the series as a whole, or just like learning new things, we encourage you to take an online UMSI course. We offer several online courses spanning topics from gamification and gameful learning to the history of the internet.
