Biography

Vidya Setlur is a Michigan Impact Professor and Associate Professor in the School of Information at the University of Michigan, where she directs the Data Semantics Lab. Her research explores the intersection of data visualization, natural language processing, human-computer interaction, and AI, with a focus on how people interact with data, express analytical intent, navigate ambiguity, and make sense of intelligent systems. She was appointed a Michigan Impact Professor in 2026 as part of the university's Faculty Expansion Program. Prior to joining U-M, she led the research team at Tableau/Salesforce and continues to maintain a limited research affiliation with Tableau Research.

My research focuses on human-centered AI for data analysis, with particular interests in data visualization, conversational analytics, natural language interfaces for data, data semantics, analytical intent, and AI-assisted sensemaking.
