Prospective faculty advisors for PhD students

We seek PhD students who are passionate about research, open to exploring the benefits of interdisciplinary perspectives, and curious about how information — broadly construed — interacts with social, economic, cultural, and technological systems.

Our community of more than 100 faculty members represents a wide range of disciplines. Many focus on how computing and communication technologies can enhance individual and collective capabilities and change social relations.

All PhD students work with one or more faculty advisors immediately upon entering the school; it's one advantage of our program. Your application will ask you to identify faculty advisors you'd be interested in working with.

To explore potential advisors, visit the UMSI faculty directory, which identifies faculty eligible to admit and advise PhD students. You can also filter by research interest to find faculty whose work aligns with your own.

For Fall 2027, the list of faculty interested in admitting new PhD students provides additional information about faculty who have expressed an interest in considering new doctoral students for this admissions cycle. This list reflects faculty interest at the time responses were collected and is not a definitive indication of who will admit students. Applicants are encouraged to identify potential advisors based on research fit, regardless of whether a faculty member appears on the interest list.
