Master of Applied Data Science tuition and funding
Tuition for the University of Michigan School of Information’s Master of Applied Data Science program reflects the high-quality instruction and student support that are central to a Michigan education.
We offer competitive tuition rates for both in-state and out-of-state students. Because U-M is partially state-funded, State of Michigan residents pay a lower rate. The rates are the same whether you take classes full or part-time.
Tuition (2025–26 academic year)
The MADS program consists of 38 credits. Students who enter with advanced standing will receive 4 credits toward the degree.
In-state students
- Per credit hour: $1,161
- Estimated total (38 credits): ~$44,118
Out-of-state students
- Per credit hour: $1,548
- Estimated total (38 credits): ~$58,825
Note: Tuition rates are set by the U-M Office of the Registrar and approved by the University of Michigan Board of Regents. Updated tuition and fees are posted annually near the start of the fall term.
Required fees
In addition to tuition, students are charged the following fees each semester (same for in-state and out-of-state students):
- Infrastructure maintenance fee: $185
- University fees: $241.19
For example, a full-time, out-of-state student enrolled in 12 credit hours during the Winter 2026 term would be charged approximately $19,002.19:
- Tuition: 12 x $1,548
- Infrastructure maintenance fee: $185
- University fees: $241.19
Funding opportunities
Unlike most online degree programs, MADS offers merit-based and need-informed scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. All applicants are automatically considered, with those who apply to the MADS program by the priority deadline receiving first consideration for these funds. No separate application is needed.
