How can the state of Michigan attract and retain top talent?

Students will compete in teams or individually to address this critical social and economic issue, conducting research and providing novel designs or recommendations to leaders in the state. While students enrolled in any accredited institution are eligible to compete — including students from across U-M — at least one member of the team must be a UMSI degree-seeking student (BSI, MSI, MHI, MADS or PhD).

The top two teams will receive $2,500 and $1,000 prizes.

The challenge

The automotive industry has historically anchored Michigan's economy — this industrial backbone fostered a skilled workforce, robust supply chains and extensive infrastructure. In recent years, Michigan has further diversified its economic portfolio by investing heavily in technology, healthcare and renewable energy sectors, broadening job opportunities.

However, attracting and retaining talent in Michigan has been challenging due to economic perceptions tied to declining manufacturing industries, a trend of "brain drain," and the urban-rural divide in job opportunities and amenities.

Through the case study competition, UMSI students will leverage their skills and creativity to shape the future of work in Michigan. Participants will choose an area of interest and focus their attention there — from the evolution of the automotive industry, to the growth of tech hubs and innovation districts, to the conservation of the Great Lakes, to renewable energy.

Deliverables might take the form of a novel technology design or redesign; the use of data to inform recommendations for policy, programs or services; or a new product, service or company.
