Andalibi: It’s important to instill digital literacy skills in teens

Last year, Meta released Threads, a new social media platform. More than 30 million users joined on the first day, including hundreds of thousands of teenagers.
University of Michigan School of Information assistant professor Nazanin Andalibi, an expert on social media, says the new platform is an excellent way for parents to begin conversation with their teenagers about social media safety and misinformation.
“Just because something has a lot of views or interactions doesn’t mean it’s credible,” Andalibi says. “It’s important for [younger social media users] to understand who’s providing the content they’re encountering. What are their sources? And what does it mean for a source to be credible?”
