Since Twitter began its “slow-motion implosion,” a slew of new social media platforms has cropped up, includingBluesky, Mastodon and Threads. This is good news for users who still want to connect, but bad news for their privacy. 

A new story from Wired reveals these new social media platforms are collecting incredible amounts of data on users, leaving them vulnerable. 

University of Michigan School of Information assistant professor Nazanin Andalibi says social media platforms have a lot of power over users, especially since users will still use their platforms despite concerns about data collection. 

“People might still use a platform that they believe will not respect their privacy,” she says.
