University of Michigan Professor Barry Fishman was recently elected a Fellow of the International Society of Learning Sciences (ISLS). The honor is in recognition of his “substantial contributions to the learning sciences.” Fishman is a faculty member in the U-M School of Information and School of Education.

Fishman is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor. His research focuses on video games as models for learning environments, teacher learning and the role of technology in supporting teacher learning, and the development of usable, scalable, and sustainable learning innovations through design-based implementation research. He is the co-creator of GradeCraft, a learning management system focused on developing learner motivation and self-regulation.

Professor Fishman was a long-serving associate editor of The Journal of the Learning Sciences. He was a co-author of the Obama Administration’s 2010 U.S. National Educational Technology Plan. In 2017 he was named the Michigan Association of State Universities “Distinguished Professor of the Year.” He was the 2001 recipient of the Jan Hawkins Award for Early Career Contributions to Humanistic Research and Scholarship in Learning Technologies from the American Educational Research Association.

The ISLS Fellows program has three main goals: to honor those who have made major research accomplishments in advancing the field of the learning sciences; to identify people who continue to take leadership roles in ISLS and serve as role models for others in the field; and to build a respected cohort of leaders who sustain the ISLS community, strengthen the organization, and advance its broader value and visibility.
