How to make the most of the UMSI Career Fair
Thursday, 01/30/2025
By Abigail McFeeAt the University of Michigan School of Information’s annual career fair, which falls on Feb. 6 in the Michigan League, students will have the opportunity to connect face-to-face with potential employers. This year’s roster includes Rocket Companies, Epic, Blue Health Intelligence, McKinsey & Company and Menlo Innovations.
“The UMSI Career Fair is an opportunity to level up your networking game, discover new career opportunities and connect directly with companies who want to hire UMSI students,” says employer and alumni relations manager Laura Marsh.
Here is a roundup of resources to help you prepare — and stay calm once you’re there.
Procter & Gamble recruiter Nia Gray (BSI ’23) has advice for making the most of your time with employers. A reassuring tip: Remember that you’re evaluating employers and their companies, too — good fit is a two-way street.
How to stand out at a career fair, according to experts: We asked a recruiter, career coaches, and UMSI students who have attended the career fair in years past to give practical advice for doing your research beforehand, speaking with recruiters and following up after the fair.

Prepare for the fair with a side of pepperoni: Attend the Career Development Office’s Pizza & Prep event on Monday, Feb. 3, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., and enjoy a one-stop shop for resume help, practicing your elevator pitch and taking a DIY headshot.
Take a breather, go-getter: At the UMSI Career Fair, you'll have access to a wellness space where you can decompress. Don’t be afraid to find a few moments for yourself, do some deep breathing in between talking to recruiters, or eat a snack and pop your AirPods in to listen to a hype song.
Build a career presence using UMSI’s LInkedIn communities: Create a post on your personal LinkedIn about your Career Fair experience, a course project or a conference you’ve attended — and follow and tag the UMSI LinkedIn page. We often react, comment or share posts, putting them in front of a broader audience, including alumni and employers.
The UMSI LinkedIn group is also a powerful networking tool. As a member, you can message any group member directly — including UMSI alumni — without needing LinkedIn Premium. Reach out to alumni in your field of interest, get career advice and build connections that could lead to internship or job opportunities.
Students can register now for the 2025 UMSI Career Fair via UMSI CareerLink.
