Teasley: Data enhances student learning and motivations

Since launching in 2018, My Learning Analytics has transformed how students learn, meet their goals and measure their success. University of Michigan School of Information research professor Stephanie Teasley led the project to create MyLA with faculty and students from UMSI and the School of Education, with staff from Information Technology Services.
The dashboard offers students insights into their study habits, allows them to monitor their progress and plan for future activity.
“Self-regulated learning talks a lot about monitoring and reflecting on what you’re doing, and I think that’s hard for students to do,” Teasley says. “’Am I keeping up? Am I doing what I’m supposed to do? How am I doing? How am I doing compared to everybody else in the class?’”
The software has been used by thousands of students at U-M and implemented at eight other universities across the country. Students who have used the platform report higher levels of confidence and increased motivation to succeed.
