UMSI events to explore UN Sustainable Development Goals in information context

The UMSI Engaged Learning Office (ELO) is hosting and cross-promoting a series of events for the University Global Coalition Sustainable Development Goals Action and Awareness Week from Monday, March 6 to Friday, March 10. These events will explore different ways the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are being addressed in an information context.

SDG Action & Awareness Week Kickoff [Register - lunch provided]
On Monday, the ELO will host a launch of the UMSI SDG Action & Awareness week. During this event, several short films will be shown on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and some ways that information and communication technologies (ICTs) might help address the goals. There will be a conversation about how those in the U-M community can participate in actions to help address the SDGs both locally and globally.

SDG Faculty Presentation - Mustafa Naseem [Register - lunch provided]
On Tuesday, the ELO will host a lecture by UMSI professor Mustafa Naseem on his work related to the SDGs. His recent work has focused on the use of information and communication technology (ICT) to improve public service delivery in global health, and water and sanitation (WASH) sectors. Naseem has taught and led ICT, design and entrepreneurship programs in six countries in Africa, Asia and North America, and prior to joining Michigan Naseem was the ICTD Expert-in-Residence at the ATLAS Institute, University of Colorado Boulder.

SDG Student Presentation - Michigan EcoData [Register - lunch provided]
On Wednesday, the ELO will host a presentation by the Michigan EcoData student organization about their work. Michigan EcoData allows students to follow their passion of environmental and ecological conservation with the help of innovations in technology and data. Michigan EcoData is a sponsored student organization of the Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS).

UMSI Event: Jean-Damascène Gasanabo
On Thursday, the ELO invites people to attend a talk by Jean-Damascène Gasanabo, former Director General of the Research and Documentation Center on Genocide at the Rwanda National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG). Gasanabo will be offering a talk entitled “Genocide Ideology and Denial in Rwanda: A Continuous Fight.”

On Friday, the ELO invites people to attend another talk by Jean-Damascène Gasanabo. Gasanabo will be offering a talk entitled “Building the Gacaca Digital Archive.”

SDG Multidisciplinary Design Jam [Registration required]
On Friday afternoon, the ELO will host a multidisciplinary design jam focused on connecting U-M students with existing clubs, courses and other opportunities centered around SDG-related action. Students from all U-M schools and colleges are welcome to attend. Registration is required to attend this event. Please register no later than Wednesday, March 8 to confirm your participation.
