Five UMSI faculty promotions were approved at the May 19, 2016 meeting of the University of Michigan Board of Regents.

Julia Adler-Milstein was promoted from assistant professor to associate professor with tenure. Kristin Fontichiaro was promoted from clinical assistant professor to clinical associate professor. Kevyn Collins-Thompson and Carl Lagoze were promoted from associate professors without tenure to associate professors with tenure. Christian Sandvig was promoted from associate professor to full professor.

Julia Adler-Milstein joined UMSI in 2011 as an assistant professor with a joint appointment in the School of Public Health, where she has been promoted to associate professor without tenure. She previously spent two years each as a research analyst at Partners HealthCare System and as a consultant at Accenture. She received her PhD from Harvard University in 2011. 

Kristin Fontichiaro joined UMSI in 2010 as a clinical assistant professor. She has more than 20 years of experience as an educator from the elementary to tertiary levels and has been deeply involved in the makerspace movement. She received her MA in Information and Library Science from Wayne State University in 2005. 

Kevyn Collins-Thompson came to UMSI in 2013 as an associate professor with a joint appointment in the College of Engineering. Before coming to UMSI, he spent five years as a researcher at Microsoft Research. He received his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University in 2008.

Carl Lagoze became a faculty member at UMSI in 2012 as an associate professor. He previously worked for 14 years as a research associate at Cornell and spent two years as a research fellow at the University of Illinois. He received his PhD from Cornell University in 2010. Before coming to UMSI he spent a year on the faculty of Cornell’s information science program.

Christian Sandvig joined UMSI in 2012 as associate professor, with a joint appointment in the Department of Communication Studies. He previously spent 10 years on the faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his PhD from Stanford University in 2002.
