Monday, 07/29/2024

The University of Michigan School of Information has launched a podcast spotlighting news and research from the world of information science.

“Information Changes Everything: The Podcast” offers informed insights on current issues — from the path to global AI regulations to the critical role libraries play in society

Blue and yellow headphones rest on a dark wood background beside a phone with the Information Changes Everything podcast displayed on Spotify. The latest episode is highlighted.

Each episode features an expert in the field discussing a key topic, alongside news briefs about research and happenings in the UMSI community. Guests include UMSI faculty members and visiting speakers.

“At UMSI, we are lucky to be at the center of conversations unfolding in the world about the ethics of AI, data privacy and more,” says Andrea Forte, dean of UMSI. “We see this podcast as an opportunity to provide wider access to the thought leaders who come to UMSI, as they navigate some of the most important topics in information science.”

10 episodes have been released so far. The first centers on comedian Dr. Medusa, who is well-known for producing satirical videos that comment on India’s political landscape. She talks about using humor to confront injustices.

Other episodes tackle the future of automotive UX with designer and UMSI Advisory Board member Paul Woods, anticipating AI failures in health care with chief health AI officer Dr. Karandeep Singh and making remote work more sustainable with assistant professor Xuan Lu.

“These are digestible episodes that, in about 20 minutes, can expand a listener’s understanding of an information issue,” says Martha Foxlong, marketing and communications writer, who coordinates production for the podcast. “We want anyone who tunes in to feel inspired and in-the-know, whether they’re part of our community or discovering UMSI for the first time.”

"Information Changes Everything" can be found on major platforms, including Apple PodcastsSpotify and YouTube, and on the UMSI website. Listeners are encouraged to subscribe and join the conversations that shape our understanding of information science.
