UMSI launches study abroad exchange programs in Ireland and Spain
Thursday, 08/04/2022
Starting August 15, University of Michigan School of Information students will be able to apply for two new study abroad opportunities: Dublin, Ireland and Barcelona, Spain. The new UMSI Exchange Programs, launching in the upcoming winter semester, will offer students the chance to receive U-M credit while continuing their education in a different country.
Students will be able to travel starting in the winter of 2023. Applications will open from August 15 — September 15, 2022 for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Information program at UMSI.
“If you want to experience living in a different place, if you want to expand your horizons, if you want to practice a new language or learn a new language, you can do all of this and continue your education through study abroad,” says Adam Freed, Global Engagement Program Manager and Adjunct Lecturer in information at UMSI.
The exchange program in Dublin will be especially beneficial for students studying data science, though some UX-themed courses will also be available. Dubbed the Silicon Valley of Europe, Dublin offers ample opportunities for students to network and explore a new country without a language barrier.
UMSI has partnered with the School of Computing at Dublin City University to give UMSI students the opportunity to take classes in data science, machine learning and computing innovation on DCU’s campus in the heart of Dublin.
For students interested in entrepreneurship, the exchange program in Barcelona will allow students to explore the intersection between business and data analytics through ESADE, a private international school specializing in business and law.
Classes taken during exchange programs typically count toward degree completion and are taught in English. The long term benefits of study abroad outweigh the travel costs in the long term, and studies have shown strong benefits in terms of employability for students who participate.
BSI student Amelia Turco traveled to Madrid, Spain through UMSI and says she loved the opportunity to meet more people and “get outside of her comfort zone.”
“Going abroad makes you comfortable with being uncomfortable,” she says. “ I think in both personal and professional ways I have a bigger worldview so I’d highly recommend it because Ann Arbor will always be here and you’re not likely to get this opportunity again.”
