University of Michigan School of Information faculty and PhD students have earned three Best Paper and five Honorable Mention designations at the 2019 ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. 

Best Paper awards go to the top one percent of accepted papers at ACM CHI, the premiere international conference on Human-Computer Interaction. This year’s conference takes place May 4-9 in Glasgow, Scotland. 

Best Paper winners: 

“Online grocery delivery services: An opportunity to address food disparities in transportation-scarce areas,” by assistant professor Tawanna R Dillahunt and PhD student Sylvia Simioni. U-M LS&A student Xuecong Xu is also an author on this study.

“Increasing the Transparency of Research Papers with Explorable Multiverse Analyses,” by assistant professor Matthew Kay and graduate assistant Abhraneel Sarma. Fanny Chevalier, Pierre Dragicevic and Yvonne Jansen are also authors on the study.

“AffinityLens: Data-Assisted Affinity Diagramming with Augmented Reality,” by PhD student Hariharan Subramonyam, and associate professor Eytan Adar. Steven Drucker of Microsoft is also an author on this study.

Honorable mention papers:

“’My blood sugar is higher on the weekends’: Finding a Role for Context and Context-Awareness in the Design of Health Self-Management Technology,” by Shriti Raj, Kelsey Toporski, Ashley Garrity, Joyce Lee and Mark W. Newman.

“Implementing Multi-Touch Gestures with Touch Groups and Cross Events,” by Steve Oney, Rebecca Krosnick, Joel Brandt and Brad Myers.

“What Happens After Disclosing Stigmatized Experiences on Identified Social Media: Individual, Dyadic, and Social/Network Outcomes,” by Nazanin Andalibi.

“What is Mixed Reality?” by Maximilian Speicher, Brian D. Hall, Michael Nebeling.

“Put Your Warning Where Your Link Is: Improving and Evaluating Email Phishing Warnings,” By Justin Petelka, Yixin Zou and Florian Schaub.

In addition to these eight papers, UMSI faculty and students had nearly two dozen additional research papers accepted, which will be presented over the five days of the conference in May.
