Over the last year, Ewelina Papiez has been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to join Phi Beta Kappa. So when the letter of invitation finally arrived in her inbox, Papiez’s excitement was instant.

“It’s a really nice honor,” she says. “I was excited to be able to accept the invitation and be part of such a cool network of people.”

Papiez, a recently graduated Bachelor of Science in Information student at the University of Michigan School of Information, is one of two UMSI students inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in 2022.

The invitation to join Phi Beta Kappa comes after students have shown “outstanding achievements” during their college careers, as well as “both breadth and depth of interest in the liberal arts and sciences,” according to the organization’s website.

Fewer than ten percent of each year’s graduating seniors and very few juniors are invited to join the Phi Beta Kappa chapter of U-M each year.

“Students who join Phi Beta Kappa can look forward to being part of a prestigious network of people,” says Elleanor Crown, secretary of U-M’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. “There’s also the programs and events and having access to groups of people from a variety of universities and backgrounds.”

Angelina Knight, also a recent graduate BSI program, was thrilled to receive her invitation.

“I think what I’m most excited about is the opportunity to interact with other people,” Knight says. “The idea of having a network of people to brainstorm with and hear their experiences is very cool.”

Knight and Papiez graduated from UMSI in April 2022. Knight is looking forward to moving to San Francisco, California and working as a software engineer at Gap, Inc. Papiez will be staying in Michigan and working as a solutions engineering analyst at Deloitte in Detroit.
