Already a University of Michigan student? You can submit your application to the Bachelor of Science in Information program as early as your first semester and start the program as a sophomore or above

The cross-campus transfer process is designed to be simple — similar to declaring a major. 

When can I apply?

We accept applications on a rolling basis from September to March 1, with a priority deadline of Jan. 15. 

You can apply during your:

  • First year to start the BSI program as a sophomore (the most common path)
  • Sophomore year to start as a junior
  • Junior year or later (just keep in mind that the BSI curriculum takes two years to complete)

How to apply

The application for fall 2027 will open this September. 

The BSI application is a form that takes about 5 minutes to complete. You’ll provide your current major, prerequisite course plans and the BSI pathway you’re interested in. 

There are no essays or letters of recommendation. 

When will I hear back? 

If you have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, you will receive a decision soon after submitting your form, confirming your admission to the BSI program for next fall. If your GPA doesn’t meet this threshold, your application will receive an additional review before you receive your decision. 

Your admission is contingent on:

  • Completing both prerequisite courses with a C or higher
  • Completing at least 24 transferable credits before you start the program
  • Remaining in good academic standing through enrollment, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

Prerequisites

Complete both of these courses with a grade of C or higher before starting the BSI program: 

  • SI 101: Introduction to Programming with Python
    • EECS 183, ENGR 101 and ROB 102 also fulfill this requirement, though SI 101 is strongly preferred.
    • SI 101 fulfills the U-M LSA Math and Symbolic Analysis distribution requirement.
  • ENGLISH 124 or 125 (or equivalent first-year writing course)

You can be enrolled in one or both prerequisite courses when you apply (or have plans to take them in the future), as long as you complete them before you enroll.

Strongly recommended course 

  • SI 110: Introduction to Information Studies 
    • This course isn’t required to enroll, but it’s a great way to get to know information science and UMSI before you join the BSI. If you don’t take SI 110 before transferring, you’ll take it during your first semester in the program. 
    • SI 110 also fulfills the U-M LSA Social Science distribution requirement.
