How do I apply?

North Quad

Our goal is to build a community of students who are diverse and multi-dimensional self-starters who will contribute both in the classroom and in the field.

To that end, we seek students with:

  • A strong academic record, successful completion of prerequisites and academic persistence in current program

  • Engagement with community and/or campus organizations

  • Demonstrated leadership capacity

You’ll need to apply for admission to the Bachelor of Science in Information program. There are three ways: as a high school student via preferred admissions, as a new transfer student from another institution or as a currently enrolled U-M student via cross-campus transfer. The School of Information admits students for the Bachelor of Science in Information degree as juniors.

Currently enrolled U-M students – Cross-campus transfer

Current University of Michigan undergraduate students apply once they have sophomore standing and transfer to the School of Information as juniors. The application deadline is February 1.

Students at other institutions – New transfer

Current community college students and students from other four-year institutions may apply to transfer to the School of Information once they have a minimum of 54 transferable college level credits. The School of Information reviews the applications and directly admits to the BSI program. The application deadline is February 1.

High school students – Preferred Admissions

The School of Information admits students as juniors; however, we encourage students applying to the University as freshmen to indicate their interest in later transferring to the School of Information by choosing the Preferred Admissions program. The application deadline is December 1 for students with sophomore standing.
