University of Michigan School of Information
How do I apply?
When you join the BSI, you become part of a community of diverse and multidimensional self-starters who contribute in the classroom and in the field.
Your application should help demonstrate:
- Strong academic performance and persistence
- Successful completion of prerequisite courses
- Engagement in community or campus organizations
- The capacity to be a leader
Prospective BSI students apply for admission through one of these pathways:
- As a currently enrolled UM-Ann Arbor student via cross-campus transfer
- As a new transfer student from another institution
- As a high school student applying to U-M by selecting preferred admission to the BSI program
Currently enrolled UM-Ann Arbor students – Cross-campus transfer
Current U-M undergraduate students can apply to transfer to UMSI by Feb. 1 of their first year to join the BSI program as sophomores — the most common path. The program also maintains flexibility for students to apply in their sophomore year, entering the BSI as juniors.
Students at other institutions – New transfer
Current community college students and students from other four-year institutions may apply to transfer to the School of Information once they have a minimum of 24 transferable college credits. UMSI reviews all new transfer applications and directly admits students to the BSI program. The application deadline is Feb. 1.
High school students – Preferred admission
High school students applying to the University of Michigan can indicate their interest in later joining the School of Information by selecting preferred admission to the BSI program on their Common Application. Preferred admission guarantees a spot in the BSI program for a student’s sophomore year, pending fulfillment of admissions requirements and a formal application during their first year at U-M.
