How do I apply to the Bachelor of Science in Information?

Choose your path to UMSI

Whether you’re a high schooler who’s already excited about the BSI program, a U-M first-year exploring your interests, a U-M sophomore thinking about making a change, or a student transferring from another institution, we have an application pathway for you.

I’m a high school student → Preferred admission

When you apply to the University of Michigan, you can indicate your interest in later joining the School of Information by selecting “preferred admission” on the Common Application. This guarantees you a spot in the BSI program as a sophomore. There are still some requirements to fulfill — and a formal application to submit – once you’re here, but as a preferred admit, we make it as easy as possible.

I’m a first-year student at U-M → Preferred admission or cross-campus transfer

You’re here at U-M, you’ve heard about the incredible BSI program, and you’re wondering when you can begin. Sophomore year is the earliest and most common entry point. If you’re a preferred admit, you’ll submit your BSI application by Jan. 15 of your first year. Psst: If you’ve fallen for UMSI but didn’t select preferred admission on the Common App, you can simply request it in the fall term instead — we encourage all first-years to choose this option. Otherwise, you will apply as a cross-campus transfer, hitting submit by Feb. 15.

I’m a U-M sophomore or above → Cross-campus transfer

Sometimes you discover your dream school a little later — that’s OK, we’re just happy you’re here. If you’re a U-M sophomore or above, you can join the BSI program as a cross-campus transfer. Apply by Feb. 15 to begin next fall. Keep in mind that the BSI curriculum takes at least two years to complete, so you’ll need to enter as a junior if you plan to graduate from U-M in four years.

I’m transferring from another institution → New transfer

If you’re a student at another four-year institution or a community college, the School of Information would love to be your next home. You can apply as a “new transfer” once you’ve earned a minimum of 24 transferable credits. UMSI reviews all new transfer applications and directly admits students to the BSI program. The application deadline is Feb. 15.
