Whether you are a student, faculty, or staff member, navigating the unspoken academic and social expectations at U-M can be daunting—especially for disabled individuals who are less familiar with the university environment or identify as first-generation college students. This interactive session draws on Universal Design (UD) and disability justice, emphasizing the importance of designing with, rather than for, those who have historically been left out, and highlights the need for intersectional, community-driven support.

Join us to share and hear stories that focus on the intersection of disability and first-generation identities; practice identifying the invisible assumptions and norms that often marginalize those learning (or relearning) higher education culture; celebrate perseverance; and collaboratively imagine more inclusive solutions and proactive ways to provide impactful support.

All UMSI faculty, staff, and students are invited. No prior experience, knowledge, or attendance required to attend this session. Lunch is provided, so an RSVP is appreciated for helping us with food coordination, but not required.

Series Description

This session is hosted by the Office of Organizational Culture and Community (OCC) in recognition of First-Generation College Student Celebration Week. This is also the third session of the series, “Lessons from Universal Design(UD)" which is a part of the Accessibility@UMSI initiative. This series explores the origins and intent of UD, its strengths and limitations, and how to continuously build on the scaffolding it provides. The UD framework allows for increased openness to and engagement with people, communities, and their emerging and unanticipated needs. There’s no one-size-fits all solution that can be measured against a checklist, and breaking with this way of thinking expands possibilities for inclusion and enriches our community needs.
