By Abigail McFeeThis past summer, more than 330 students from the University of Michigan School of Information put their skills to use in real-world contexts through internships.
The 2025 UMSI internship reports highlight the experiences of students in the Bachelor of Science in Information, Master of Science in Information and Master of Health Informatics programs.
“Despite broader narratives about a declining job market with increased competition, we continue to see strong outcomes from UMSI students in their internship search,” said Krystle Forbes, associate director of career development at UMSI. “The number and quality of outcomes remained steady, and we were particularly excited to see slight increases in average hourly wages across all degree programs.”
Where did BSI students intern?
Top industries included finance, technology, consulting, and entertainment and gaming, as students took on roles like experience design intern at Adobe, business analyst intern at Capital One, product design intern at The Washington Post, and UX design intern at Nintendo. And 96% of BSI students said their internship made them better prepared for their future career.
“My team was very open to communication, welcomed any and all questions, and valued my contributions. They treated me like a full-time employee, which inherently made my work way better,” said BSI student Konstantinos Hatzopoulos, who spent the summer as a consulting analyst intern at Kalypso.
The 97% of BSI students who secured a paid internship earned an average of $30 per hour, outperforming the national average of $23 per hour for undergraduate interns. The UMSI Internship Grant helped to support unpaid and underpaid internship experiences for students in all UMSI degree programs.
Where did MSI students intern?
MSI students pursued internships across industries and around the world, with technology, finance, consumer goods, universities and colleges, and health and medicine as the top industries. “UMSI helped prepare me for this internship in more ways than I can count,” said Charlotte Parent, a BSI graduate and accelerated master’s degree student in the MSI program. “From the stellar career advice in SI 300 and the Career Development Office, to the projects involving complex datasets… the program has given me a toolbox of skills I’ve used to succeed in a multidisciplinary internship.”
Where did MHI students intern?
MHI students landed internships in health and medicine, technology, universities and colleges, and nonprofits, making an average of $27 per hour.
Roles included health care data analyst at Centene, public health fellow for the City of Dearborn, and clinical research intern at U-M’s Center for Global Health Equity. And 89% said their internship made them better prepared for their future career.
“My supervisor provided consistent guidance and encouraged me to connect technical work with clinical impact,” said Haichao Min, health informatics intern at Zhujiang Hospital. “This internship gave me hands-on experience with real hospital data and systems, and strengthened my skills in data quality, system prototyping and cross-functional collaboration.”
How did UMSI students find internships?
Across programs, networking remained a top strategy for finding an internship, followed by job boards and company websites.
UMSI’s Career Development Office provides support for students in all degree programs, through every phase of their internship search. Students can take advantage of career coaching, career and internship studio courses and peer career coaching.
“We encourage UMSI students to connect with us at any point in the internship search process,” said Jordan Hansen, assistant director of undergraduate career education. “As career coaches, we strive to be brainstorming partners by learning about students' goals and what they've tried so far, empathizing with the challenges of the internship search process and helping them identify resources and clear next steps.”
