ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, has named University of Michigan School of Information professor and associate dean for academic affairs Cliff Lampe a 2024 fellow for his “contributions on social network systems, and outstanding leadership in the ACM SIGCHI community.”

“I’m incredibly honored to be named an ACM Fellow and to be joining the ranks of scholars I’ve long admired,” Lampe says. “I’m grateful for all of my collaborators here at the School of Information and at my previous position at Michigan State University. Research is a collaborative effort, and I’ve been very fortunate in working with great people.”

The ACM Fellows program recognizes the top 1% of ACM Members for their outstanding accomplishments in computing and information technology. Fellows are nominated by their peers, with nominations reviewed by a distinguished selection committee.

“Computing technology has had a tremendous impact in shaping how we live and work today,”

says ACM President Yannis Ioannidis. “The ACM Fellows program honors the creativity and hard work of ACM members whose specific accomplishments drive innovation and make broader advances possible. In announcing a new class of Fellows each year, we celebrate the impact some of our community’s pioneers make, and highlight the many technical areas of computing in which they work.”

Lampe’s accomplishments in the field of computing are vast. His research on the social and technical structures of large scale technology mediated communication has led to work with sites like Facebook, Wikipedia, Slashdot and Everything2. He has been involved in the creation of multiple social media and online community projects, usually designed to enable collective action. One of Lampe’s core values is combining top quality research with community engagement.

At UMSI, Lampe has published a plethora of research on online harassment, the threat of misinformation and disinformation on democracy and the opportunities, risks and harms of generative AI for fostering safe online communities

Lampe has held various positions at the Association for Computing Machinery special interest group on computer-human interaction (SIGCHI), including executive vice president, vice president for publications and chair of the CHI Conference steering committee.

“I’m grateful for the hundreds of volunteers I’ve worked with over the years in my service work for SIGCHI,” he says. “So much volunteer labor goes into the production of science, and I’ve been amazed by how whole-heartedly people contribute their labor to that enterprise.”
