When Toronto attempted to implement smart city infrastructure in one neighborhood, the project failed. A popular new play — “The Master Plan” — dramatizes the failures of the project through satire.

University of Michigan School of Information assistant professor Ben Green, an expert on smart cities and author of the book “The Smart Enough City: Putting Technology in Its Place to Reclaim Our Urban Future” is interested in the ways in which the play can help us think about the limitations and opportunities of smart city technology.

“I love how theater can be a useful way to educate the public about what has happened with smart cities, and what these proposed technologies can and can’t do,” he said.
