University of Michigan School of Information lecturer Lija Hogan has earned the working title of Teaching Professor by the U-M Office of the Provost, effective September 1, 2026.

The title is a significant recognition for career teaching faculty at U-M. It honors expertise and excellence among career teaching faculty and meaningful contributions to students’ learning.

Hogan is a UMSI alum and one of the first graduates of the Master of Science in Information program. She says being part of the UMSI community as a student, staff member and faculty member has been one of the most rewarding benefits of being part of UMSI.

“Bringing industry experience and perspectives to the classroom is important to me and highlights the connection between UMSI and global design, product, research and information communities,” she says.

At UMSI, Hogan’s work reflects UMSI’s deep commitment to student-centered learning. The title recognizes not only classroom instruction, but also the broader ways career teaching faculty shape curriculum, mentor students and contribute to the successful academic focus of the school.

Hogan says the recognition of clinical faculty helps the public understand and celebrate the connection between the theoretical and practical activities the University of Michigan supports.

“This focus is why I came to UMSI as a student and continue to work with students as an instructor,” Hogan says. “I love to help them ask and answer hard questions and explore new ways to address a broad range of user needs.”

She also says one of the most meaningful parts of teaching is seeing former students thrive in the field, including in her “day job” at UserTesting, at conferences and at other events.
