Master of Applied Data Science program eliminates application fee

By Abigail McFeeInterested students can now apply to the University of Michigan School of Information’s online degree program, the Master of Applied Data Science, at no cost.
Beginning with applicants for fall 2026, the program is waiving its application fee — previously $75 for U.S. citizens and permanent residents and $90 for international applicants.
Kelly Barger, senior recruiting and admissions coordinator, said the change is aimed at reducing barriers for applicants.
“The decision to eliminate the application fee represents a thoughtful and substantive step toward broadening access to graduate education,” Barger said, “by removing a financial barrier at the point of entry.”
What is the Master of Applied Data Science program?
Launched in 2019, the MADS program is designed to provide global access to a data science education from one of the top public universities in the U.S. Because the courses are online and asynchronous, the program is suited to working professionals at all career stages — from recent graduates to senior leaders and CEOs — as well as caregivers, active-duty service members and veterans.
MADS focuses on applying data science techniques to real-world problems across industries, leading to strong outcomes for students pivoting to a new career or seeking advancement in their current role. In the 2024 employment report, MADS graduates who accepted their first data science role reported an average salary of $107K.
What are the application requirements for MADS?
Applicants are qualified as long as they have a bachelor’s degree in any subject, basic programming skills and English proficiency. In keeping with the program’s commitment to access, the application doesn’t require essays, letters of recommendation or the GRE.
After being admitted, applicants complete a brief placement test to determine their starting point in the program, based on Python proficiency. Those with a deeper knowledge of Python have the opportunity to enter the program with credit already earned.
The application for fall 2026 is open, with a priority deadline of June 15 and a final deadline of July 15. Explore the MADS program and apply at no cost.
