University of Michigan School of Information assistant professor Megan Threats has been appointed 2025-26 chair-elect of the Association for Information Science and Technology’s Health Informatics Special Interest Group.

The appointment recognizes Threats’ growing leadership in the field of health informatics and her commitment to advancing it through an information science lens.

“I’m excited about having a leadership role where I can help shape the direction of the Health Informatics Special Interest Group,” she says. “I’m also looking forward to increasing the visibility of health informatics based approaches within ASIS&T, and helping people better understand what this work encompasses. Being part of defining how the field talks about health informatics feels meaningful.”

ASIS&T’s health informatics special interest group brings together scholars, practitioners and students who use information science methods to understand health outcomes and health behaviors – and the systems that shape them. Threats first joined ASIS&T as a doctoral student and has remained connected to it throughout her career.

“One of my goals with this new role is to improve the visibility of ASIS&T and information science approaches to health informatics,” Threats says. “There’s a lot of diversity in how people conceptualize health informatics, but at its core, it’s rooted in information science. For me, this role is an opportunity to highlight those roots and show how information science underpins the work we do.”

In her new role, Threats will help shape SIG-HI’s programming and strategic direction. Her responsibilities include fostering community among domestic and international scholars, hosting webinars, collaborating on initiatives and participating in award selection processes.

Threats says she’s excited about how the position will give UMSI students even more direct pathways into the organization’s community, events and scholarly networks.

“We have a lot of students who can benefit from having their professors in leadership roles at these organizations,” she says. “I hope this helps draw more UMSI students into ASIS&T so they can find a community and an audience for their research.”
