University of Michigan School of Information assistant professor Chelsea Peterson-Salahuddin has published a book chapter in “Strategic Social Media as Activism: Repression, Resistance, Rebellion, Reform,” a new book from Routledge.

The book examines the roles strategic communications play in creating social media messaging campaigns designed to engage in digital activism.

Peterson-Salahuddin’s chapter, “Any Time, Any Cause, Anywhere: Hyperlocal Protests Secure Global Support & The Case of #EndSars,” explores how hashtag activism allows for transnational coalition-building across social movements, allowing them to gain global support.

The chapter looks at the #EndSars movement in Nigeria and its connection to the Black Lives Matter movement in the U.S and Europe.

“Social movement theorists have argued that geographical and spatial isolation often left little opportunities for transnational coalition-building due to the lack of ‘free space’ for organizing and coordination” Peterson-Salahuddin says. “Through this case study, I demonstrate how hashtag activism has allowed for new approaches to social movement coalition-building in ways that both align and push against traditional social movement theory.”

The book is available from Routledge and is expected to be a useful supplement for courses in public relations, journalism, social media, sociology, political science, diversity, digital activism and mass communication at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
