The University of Michigan School of Information welcomes Lisa Carter as a clinical professor of information. In May, Carter became the University Librarian and Dean of Libraries at The University of Michigan Library.
Carter received her master’s degree in information and library studies from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary humanities from Michigan State University.
“My time at UMSI laid the groundwork for a varied and interesting career path,” she says. “ It showed me that the information profession was a varied and endlessly interesting place where people can pursue what most interests them while connecting others to that developed knowledge. It provided me with opportunities to experiment and learn and opened doors to leadership roles.”
Before coming to U-M, Carter was the Vice Provost for Libraries and University Librarian at University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has served in a variety of roles at Iowa State University, University of Kentucky, North Carolina State University and Ohio State University.
Carter is excited to return to U-M and continue her professional journey.
“As Dean of Libraries and a professor of information at UMSI, I am most excited about building on the long legacy of excellence and innovation in the library and the school,” she says. “Colleagues at U-M are doing amazing things, tackling the most difficult questions and innovating to advance real-world challenges. I hope that I can bring my passion for connecting and optimizing impact to the great work happening in the library and to future campus collaborations, especially with UMSI.”
At UMSI, Carter will be teaching courses and deepening the relationship between UMSI and the University of Michigan Library. She says she’s most excited to “reconnect and renew” her affiliation with the school.
“I look forward to getting to know more about UMSI's current and future portfolio so that I can understand how I can best contribute,” she says. “ I've been really impressed by the current faculty, staff, and students at UMSI. The level of thinking and purposeful pursuit of scholarship meant to improve access to and understanding of information is truly impressive with endless opportunities to make the world a better place.”
