Master of Science in Information internship requirement
As an MSI student, you have the opportunity to build experience, a portfolio and a professional network by completing internships for academic credit. Internships give you a better understanding of opportunities and challenges in the field, while creating connections that often lead directly to employment.
You will have access to robust support from the Career Development Office, including career and internship courses specifically designed to prepare you for your search, personalized coaching and facilitated connections with employers and alumni.
How do I earn credit for my internship?
You are required to earn six credits from internships and able to earn up to nine credits. You must complete two semesters of study with UMSI before you are eligible to earn internship credit. Internships are typically completed in the summer between your first and second year of the program, but can also be completed in the fall or winter semesters.
You can fulfill this requirement by taking one or a combination of UMSI’s internship courses:
- SI 690: Internship/Field Experience (1-9 credits)
- SI 681: Internship/Field Experience (1-6 credits)
- SI 688: UMSI Facilitated Internship Experience (6 credits)
What counts as an approved internship?
Internships can be part-time or full-time, remote, hybrid or in person, and can be based anywhere in the world. We welcome nontraditional internships that support your goals, including research, entrepreneurship and self-directed projects.
The Career Development Office will review your internship to make sure it meets these eligibility requirements:
- The internship is related to what is taught and researched at UMSI and connects to your coursework and future career goals.
- The internship provides hands-on professional work that helps you develop new learning, skills and abilities.
- The internship includes a professional supervisor with three or more years of experience who provides mentorship.

I have an F-1 student visa. Am I eligible to participate in internships?
Yes. Because an internship is a required component of the UMSI curriculum, students on an F-1 visa may be able to use Curricular Practical Training authorization for off-campus internships. Please work with the International Center to review your eligibility for CPT or another work authorization
