Incoming exchange students

The University of Michigan School of Information is one of the world’s premier iSchools. We prepare students to become leaders in a wide variety of information-related careers. 

Incoming exchange, or mobility, students who come to UMSI will benefit from the opportunity to complete real-world projects in information science, faculty with national and international reputations for excellence in teaching and research, state-of-the-art facilities, and a safe place to live and learn in one of the best college towns in the United States of America. 

How do I become an incoming UMSI exchange student?

Only students from UMSI's bilateral exchange partner universities are eligible to become exchange students at UMSI, studying here for one or two semesters. 

We invite bachelor's students from:

  • Anatolia American University in Thessaloniki, Greece
  • Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences in Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • Dublin City University in Dublin, Ireland
  • Escola Superior d'Administració i Direcció d'Empreses (ESADE) in Barcelona, Spain
  • IE University in Madrid, Spain
  • Prague University of Economics and Business (VSE) in Prague, Czech Republic
  • University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia
  • Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden

We invite master's students from:

  • Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden
  • University of Tsukuba in Tsukuba, Japan

Nomination and application deadlines

You must be nominated by your home school advisor to become an exchange student at UMSI. Nominated students will then complete an application in the university's international programs portal, M-Compass. Deadlines remain the same each year.

Fall semester exchange (late August-December): 

  • Nomination Deadline: Feb. 15
  • Student Application Deadline: March 1

Winter semester exchange (January-April):

  • Nomination Deadline: Sep. 1
  • Student Application Deadline: Sep. 15

Student application requirements

  • UMSI incoming exchange application
  • Passport copy
  • Resume
  • Transcript
  • Verification of English proficiency (provided by home institution). 

Students will receive information about I-20s, F-1 visas and submitting financial documentation after admission to the exchange program.

English proficiency requirements

Applicants whose native language is not English must submit official score reports from one of the following tests, taken within the past two years. This is not required from universities where English is the primary language of instruction.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (strongly preferred)

  • We recommend a score of 5+ overall with 5+ in each section on the new TOEFL scale (102+ overall with 25+ in each section on the previous TOEFL scale)
  • When taking the TOEFL, use the U-M institution code: 1839
  • The School of Information does not have a specific department code for the TOEFL; you may list "99"

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

  • We recommend a score of 7.5+ overall

We accept the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition and IELTS Online, which are equivalent to the in-person exams.

Exchange students can choose from a variety of housing options, including on-campus residence halls, co-operative housing,  off-campus apartments, or the Global Scholars Program, a living-learning community in North Quad.
