On Saturday, November 17, from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm, high school girls from Detroit will channel their creative energies to address the problem of food insecurity during a workshop designed to introduce them to technology,"Let's Talk About Food: An Ideathon on Food Insecurity."

It's part of Brave Initiatives-Detroit, a nonprofit originally started in Chicago. The half-day event will help the girls see themselves as technology creators and designers at an age when many of them get discouraged, thinking tech is not for them, says Robin Brewer, assistant professor and presidential postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan School of Information, who started the program.

Brewer says young women in underserved communities, in which many schools are under-resourced, tend to lose sight of technology in high school, thinking it's something for boys, or is simply out of reach.

At the end of the session, the young women will have learned more about the impacts of food insecurity in their own communities and will have prototyped a tech-related solution.

The event wil take place at the U-M Detroit Center, 3663 Woodward Ave., Detroit.
