UMSI Mentor Match
The Mentor Match program pairs University of Michigan School of Information students with alumni for structured one-on-one mentorship.
As a student, you will gain a professional resource whose career background fits your goals and interests. Your mentor will provide industry knowledge, give you valuable advice and encourage you to set and achieve goals.
As a mentor, you will have the opportunity to advise and support a current student while honing your own coaching skills. You’ll be supported with resources from the Career Development Office, including more than 20 sample meeting agendas on career topics.
Program duration
Six months (November-April)
Pairs meet at least once a month.
How to register
The form is the same for mentors and mentees:
Deadline: November 8, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET
A note on selection: The Mentor Match program has limited capacity. We encourage anyone who is interested to register, but we can’t guarantee that you will be matched.
Being introduced to my mentor has truly changed my life. She introduced me to tech consulting, a world I didn't even know existed. Not only was she able to guide me — she was able to inspire and mentor me. I have been looking for this experience the entire time I was at the university, to have a meaningful connection with someone who understands my background and knows where you can go from there.
About the program
UMSI Mentor Match launched in 2024 in response to student demand for deeper connections with alumni. The Career Development Office designed the program based on student and alumni input, with the goal of addressing historical barriers students face in building social capital and accessing the UMSI alumni network.
of mentors would participate in the program again
of students reported they had a long-term career advocate after the program
of students said they understood the next steps to take for career success
I wanted to become a mentor because of the impact the School of Information has had on me and my career. [Mentor Match] is not only beneficial for the person you're mentoring, but for your own self-growth. And at least for me, UMSI had such a profound impact on the trajectory I've taken, that it's the least I can do.
