By Abigail McFeeThe University of Michigan School of Information’s 2025 employment reports show the value of degrees rooted in real-world experience.
Despite shifts in the job market, UMSI graduates leveraged their sociotechnical skills and fluency in emerging technologies to secure roles at leading tech companies and non-tech organizations alike.
In a survey of the class of 2024 conducted by UMSI’s Career Development Office, the top industries where graduates landed included technology, consulting, financial services and health/medicine.
Employment rates sat at 94%, 87% and 96% for graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Information, Master of Science in Information and Master of Health Informatics programs respectively. UMSI graduates continue to command competitive salaries relative to national averages for information science programs.
Across programs, the class of 2024 cited the preparation provided by UMSI — including career courses, client-based projects and research — as crucial to their job outcomes.
“In today’s labor market, where new graduate hiring is increasingly competitive and unemployment rates for recent grads are at historic highs, these experiences provide students with the applied skills, professional networks and career readiness they need to stand out and succeed,” says Joanna Kroll, director of career development at UMSI.
Companies with the most UMSI hires from the class of 2024 included Google, Microsoft, Accenture, Boston Consulting Group, Deloitte, American Express, EY, Ford, General Motors, IBM, PwC, Wayfair and Procter & Gamble.
Graduates across programs indicated that they prioritized company culture (inclusion, support, values and beliefs), nature of the job and geographic location in their job decisions. The average job search length was three to four months for BSI, MSI and MHI graduates. Networking continued to top the list of effective job search methods reported by UMSI graduates.
“At UMSI, we recognize that not all students have access to a professional network,” Kroll says. “So, it is a priority of the Career Development Office to provide greater access to alumni and industry professionals for all students through a variety of mentorship opportunities that meet students where they are.” These opportunities include 30-minute micro-mentorship sessions, group mentorship through panels and fireside chats, and semester-long formal mentorship from alumni.
95% of respondents across programs said their internship experience was valuable to their job outcome. “Internships set students up for career success and make them incredibly marketable and qualified candidates across a diversity of roles and industries,” Kroll says.
Among BSI respondents, 30% accepted a return offer from an internship. BSI graduates cited the career and internship courses embedded in their curriculum, as well as their capstone course with a client-based project, as the curricular experiences that most contributed to their job success.
Among MSI graduates, job titles like human-centered product manager showed alignment with UMSI’s human-centered approach to technology. Graduates also took on roles including associate conversational AI designer and gen AI analyst, demonstrating the growing demand for experts who know how to design and apply AI tools responsibly.
Product management roles are a fast-growing destination for UMSI graduates, Kroll says, while UX designer and UX researcher remain top outcomes across the BSI and MSI programs.
Nearly a third of respondents who graduated from the Master of Applied Data Science program, UMSI’s fully-online master’s degree, were able to make a successful career pivot into the data science field or secure a promotion within their current organization after earning the degree.
For 2024 MADS graduates who landed their first job in the data science field, top industries included tech, manufacturing, consulting and financial services. Other MADS graduates applied their new skills in their existing roles, started their own business ventures or continued their education.
International students were able to find substantial roles at high-profile companies in the U.S. after graduating. Companies where UMSI international students were hired and sponsored in 2024 include Google, Deloitte, Michigan Medicine, Moody’s, Talkney, Amazon, Apple, Cisco, Cognizant, Alibaba, Didi, Tencent, Xiaomi Tech, Quantum Compliance Systems, Microsoft, Meta and more.
