Speaker bio:
Pat Schloss is the Chair of the Journals Committee for the American Society for Microbiology where he has helped to promote issues around DEI and open science. At the University of Michigan, he is the Frederick G Novy Collegiate Professor for Microbiome Research in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology. His research group studies the role of the gut microbiota in human health and disease using DNA sequencing and reproducible data science practices. He is active on campus as the sponsor of a local chapter of the Carpentries through which he and others introduce UM researchers to implement reproducible research skills. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Schloss has been posting videos to YouTube teaching these skills to a broader audience. His Riffomonas channel has nearly 13,000 subscribers and 265 videos. In 2022, Schloss was inducted as a Fellow of the AAAS and received the ASM Microbiome Data Prize. He received his BS and PhD from Cornell University where he studied engineering and then did a postdoc at the University of Wisconsin.
