UMSI Staff Awards honor workplace excellence
UMSI celebrated the persistence and excellence of two staff members in 2020. The annual recognitions went to Scott TenBrink, who received the Outstanding Staff award, and Carolyn Gregurich, who received the Peer-to-Peer award.
The staff are recognized through a peer-nomination process with committee oversight. Todd Ayotte, director of finance, who chaired this year’s selection committee, said of the awards: “The selection team and I had a very challenging task of narrowing down the nominations to one winner in each category. There were numerous exceptional nominations and all would have been well deserving of the awards. However, Scott and Carolyn stood out among this year's nominations with their continued commitment to UMSI's mission and core values.” Selection committee members are staff who received the awards the previous year.
The Outstanding Staff award is given to a UMSI staff member who contributes in an exceptional way to advancing UMSI’s mission. Scott, a Civic Engagement Program Manager and Adjunct Lecturer in Information, was chosen for his efforts to provide students with leadership opportunities and prepare them for the working world.
Scott has been a part of UMSI since 2013 and said, “I've come to really enjoy my teaching roles and working with students in many different ways, but the greatest reward is seeing the impact of student work on the communities they work in. In particular, I'm proud of the voting projects I've worked on with the City of Ann Arbor and the Michigan Department of State.”
The fellow nominees for the Outstanding Staff Award were Caroline Gregurich, Allison Sweet, Kelly Iott and Sally Bazuin.
The Peer-to-Peer award honors a staff member whose efforts are commendable in service to other staff or to the work environment at UMSI. Carolyn, an HR generalist senior, has worked at the school since 2016 and was selected for the honor because of the positivity she brings to the office and her willingness to help colleagues with any challenges that arise.
She said her favorite part of her role “has been getting to be a part of the growth and helping new and existing employees navigate the school. Additionally, I've enjoyed the emphasis our school places on employee engagement through staff meetings, committees, and events, and I like when I get to be creative and help bring those to life.”
Nominations for this award are accepted from any member of the UMSI community. Last year's nominees were Allison Sweet, Annie Knill, Scott TenBrink, Devon Keen, Emma Frazier, Jocelyn Webber, Kelly Iott, Kelly Kowatch, Michael Hess, Nitesh Singh, Rebecca Epstein, Becky O’Brien, Sally Bazuin, Stacy Callahan and Todd Stuart.
